There is a proposal to the Maritime Safety Committee of the IMO to introduce VDES into Chapter V of SOLAS, which will enter into force on 1 January 2024. This VDES ("Next Generation AIS") standard will be important for future "e-navigation" applications.
Saab Transponder Tech is committed to staying at the forefront of the new VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) technology. They announced that they have launched the first product in their future VDES portfolio, the R60 VDES station available in 3 models (Standard / Full / Secure).
The R60 is the successor of the AIS R40 base station and supports both standard AIS operations and the new VDES-ASM channels at launch. The R60, with its new VDES standard, brings important benefits such as :
- The VDES standard supports a much higher bandwidth than AIS.
- an open system architecture by supporting all relevant standard protocols (using Ethernet LAN as primary interconnect & the R60 is fully compliant with the IEC 62320-1 specification)
It should be noted that the R60 includes a "Legacy" mode and can seamlessly replace an R40 without the need to modify the external interface system and that the accessory package for the R60 contains a different GNSS antenna from the R40 product range. The GNSS receiver of the R60 supports not only GPS, but also GLONASS, GALILEO and Beidou.
